How to Start a Blog


I wrote this “How to Start a Blog” in inspiration to the article mentioned at the bottom by LukeGuy.

1. Your Purpose

The most important thing you need for starting a blog, is a purpose. If you have a piece of paper beside you I would highly recommend you write down, right now, what is your purpose for your blog. Now hang that paper on the wall beside your computer to remind you, every time you make a new post, what is your purpose for doing it.

2. Get a catchy name, and your niche

The best selling point of any website, is a catchy name (or phrase) and trying your best to sell your niche. For me it is Technology posts and articles of my journey through braces. Simple but it has a niche to it. I also know my purpose. The catchy name is Bens Blog. Simple and easy!

3. Getting Started – Getting Technical

The next thing you need is to choose what you want to post your articles with. There are many platforms that allow you to make a blog. But here is a few questions to ask yourself first

  • Do I want to put any money in this blog?
  • Do I want my own domain? Like instead of
  • Do I want to be able to customize me blog all the way to the code of it?

If you answered yes to all of those, then you will need to buy Website Hosting for your blog. I recommend you buying from Godaddy for the best customer experience.

If you answered no to all or any of those, then you can choose between buying hosting, or using a free blog software. Here are some Free Blog websites I recommend you use

  • (Different from | Put at the end of your domain
  • Tumblr | Puts at the end of your domain
  • Blogger | Puts at the end of your domain
  • Ghost (No Longer Free unless you use their Download which requires Hosting)

Once you have chosen your blog platform, you’re ready to move on!

4. Content, content, content

You must post relevant, original, rich content. Search engines love rich content! It’s a great way to gain traffic to your website. Look around for interesting topics that are trending and post about it. You can post with your own thoughts about it, or just give facts about it. It just depends on what your purpose is from Step #1.

You want to keep your audience on a leash too. Get them to sign up on your E-Mail newsletter so that you keep their attention! I check my email many, many times a day. It’s like my mailbox, but more convenient to check. Let your readers know you are available for questions and requests for new content. For example, if I get an email from a readers of mine, asking to write more on Bitcoins. Then I would begin my writing process to give more facts and research for my readers on the topic of Bitcoins. I make myself open to the public for requests so I can keep their attention.

Interaction is a must for a new blog or website. Polls, Giveaways, Newletters, and comments is the way to keep your blog alive and active.

Look at other famous and popular blog, like Techcrunch or CNET. They have giveaways all the time! You have to keep your readers attention if you want to stay alive on the web.

5. Advertise Yourself

If you don’t want to pour your wallet into Google Adwords, you don’t have to! Word-of-mouth is the best way to get your blog rolling. Tell your family and friends about it and let them begin to enjoy your content, then let them advertise your blog to their friends, and so on.. It is called the pyramid effect which is extremely productive! Give it a shot and you won’t be disappointed.

If you do have money to spare, I wouldn’t recommend you putting your money in Adwords, but instead into getting your own domain for your blog. Re-read Step #2 about getting Website Hosting and a Custom Domain. This will help you brand your name; which is REALLY important.
